Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is a procedure that can be used to screen embryos for genetic defects before they are transferred to the uterus. PGT can be used to help couples who are at risk of having a child with a genetic disorder, or to help couples who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss or recurrent implantation failure.

Types of PGT

There are three main types of PGT:

PGT-A

PGT-A (preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy) is used to test embryos for the number of chromosomes. Aneuploidy is a condition in which embryos have too many or too few chromosomes. Aneuploidy can cause miscarriage, birth defects, and intellectual disabilities. Examples of aneuploidy include Down’s syndrome (Trisomy 21) or Turner’s syndrome (Monosomy X).

PGT-M

PGT-M (preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders) is used to test embryos for specific genetic disorders. Monogenic disorders are caused by mutations in a single gene. Some examples of monogenic disorders include cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, and Huntington’s disease.

PGT-SR

PGT-SR (preimplantation genetic testing for structural rearrangements) is used to test embryos for chromosomal structural rearrangements. Structural rearrangements are changes in the order or structure of chromosomes. Some common structural rearrangements include translocations and inversions. Many patients, including both the female and male partners with translocations may suffer repeated miscarriages.

PGT and IVF

PGT can be performed during in vitro fertilization (IVF). During IVF, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. Once the embryos have developed for a few days, they can be biopsied. A small number of cells is removed from the embryo and tested for genetic defects.

If the embryos are found to be free of genetic defects, they can be transferred to the uterus. This can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy and reduce the risk of having a child with a genetic disorder.

PGT is a relatively new procedure, but it has been shown to be effective in helping couples who are at risk of having a child with a genetic disorder. PGT can also help couples who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss.
