Semen analysis is a crucial diagnostic tool used to assess male fertility. This simple, in office test is a key component in assessing male fertility and can often identify issues that contribute to an inability to achieve a pregnancy naturally. What is measured in semen analysis?
When this test is ordered by our New Jersey male factor specialist, the semen analysis is performed in our IVF lab by a skilled andrologist. The man provides a semen sample through masturbation or intercourse with a medical condom, and our andrologist uses advanced equipment and training to quickly produce a detailed report documenting the volume and quality of the sperm.
Several parameters are measured to evaluate male fertility. At Conceive NJ, we follow the guidelines of the World Health Organization Laboratory Manual for the examination of semen.
Sperm count
Sperm count, or the concentration of sperm in a given sample. A low sperm count may indicate potential fertility issues. A normal sperm count is typically considered to be 39 million or higher total per ejaculation.
Sperm motility
Sperm motility, or the ability of sperm to move effectively. Motility is essential for sperm to reach and fertilize the egg. Reduced motility can hinder fertility. At least 32% of sperm should demonstrate forward progressive motility.
Sperm morphology
Sperm morphology, or the shape and structure of sperm. Abnormalities in sperm shape can affect their ability to penetrate and fertilize an egg. Around 4% or more of sperm with normal morphology is considered within the normal range.
Semen volume & Ph
Semen volume, or the amount of semen produced during ejaculation. Low semen volume may affect the delivery and survival of sperm. Normal semen volume ranges from 1.5 to 7.6 milliliters per ejaculation.
Ph, or acidity is also tested. Normal Ph is 7.2 to 7.8.
White blood cells
White blood cells, which may indicate an infection or inflammation in the reproductive tract. We use special staining techniques to determine if there are abnormal high numbers of white blood cells which may be amenable to treatment with antibiotics.
