State-of-the-art IVF with an experienced IVF specialist
IVF, or in vitro fertilization, is an advanced assisted reproductive technology that offers hope to couples struggling with infertility. Dr. Isaac Glatstein, the New Jersey IVF specialist who founded Conceive NJ, has helped thousands of men, women and couples achieve pregnancy through IVF. This proven treatment can overcome even some of the most severe infertility challenges.
Who needs IVF?
While not everyone seeking fertility treatment needs IVF, our New Jersey specialist may recommend this advanced assisted reproductive technology for individuals or couples facing certain fertility issues.
- Blocked fallopian tubes. If the fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged, IVF bypasses this obstacle by directly combining eggs and sperm in a laboratory.
- Low sperm count or poor sperm quality. IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can overcome even severe cases of male factor infertility. ICSI involves injecting a single sperm directly into the egg, increasing the chances of fertilization.
- Advanced maternal age. As women age, the quantity and quality of their eggs decrease. IVF can help overcome age-related infertility by retrieving as many eggs as possible to increase the chances of conception. For some people, IVF with donor eggs is an excellent choice that allows for the experience of pregnancy and birth.
- Genetic disorders. IVF with preimplantation genetic testing allows for the selection of embryos that are free of chromosomal or specific genetic defects, increasing the chances of successful pregnancy while reducing the risk of genetic disorders in children.
- Same-sex male couples. For single or gay men who hope to become fathers, IVF with donor eggs and a gestational carrier is a highly effective fertility treatment.
- Unexplained infertility. When the cause of infertility cannot be identified, IVF can be an effective option to improve the chances of having a successful pregnancy and, in many cases, may also uncover the cause of the fertility issue.
Fertility testing before IVF
If you have been trying to conceive without success, IVF offers hope. Fertility testiing of both partners provides the answers needed to create a custom IVF treatment plan that provides the highest chance of success.
How does in vitro fertilization work?
The IVF process involves multiple steps over several weeks, all carefully and closely monitored by our New Jersey IVF specialist to maximize the chances of success.
Ovarian stimulation
The right mix of medications is prescribed to stimulate the ovaries to produce and mature multiple eggs at the same time.
Egg retrieval & sperm collection
When the timing is right, the eggs are collected from the ovaries through a minor surgical procedure under complete sedation.
Around the same time, a sperm sample is obtained, either from a partner or a sperm donor. In some cases, sperm is collected and frozen prior to the egg retrieval to ensure its availability on the actual day of the egg retrieval.
Fertilization
In our IVF laboratory, a skilled and highly experienced embryologist combines the eggs and sperm. In many cases, our embryologists will use an advanced procedure known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), in which a single sperm is injected directly into each egg to achieve fertilization.
Embryo culture
The resulting embryos are placed into a special advanced laboratory incubator for a few days, and their development is carefully monitored by our laboratory team. During this time, genetic testing of the embryos can be performed, if the parents choose this option. Typically, embryos are frozen and stored while the woman prepares her uterus for the embryo transfer by taking additional medications.
Embryo transfer
Our physician and lab team will recommend which embryo is the best candidate for transfer and most likely to develop into an established pregnancy. Our fertility specialist then carefully transfers the embryo into the uterus in a simple procedure, using a thin catheter, using ultrasound guidance to ensure correct placement.
Post-transfer medication
The woman will continue to take medication to support a developing pregnancy. About two weeks after the embryo transfer, she will return to our office for a pregnancy test. If the test is positive, she will continue to take medications and return to our office for labwork and ultrasounds to ensure a viable pregnancy. Once a viable pregnancy is confirmed, we will transfer your care to your OBGYN physician team.
